December Client Spotlight - 75 Hard Challengers

Today the spotlight is on three beautifully created, endurance-strong, inspiring women:

Lisa Irvin
Traci Britt
Maggie Eterno

We hope to encourage you, to go ALL IN the last 5 weeks of 2022. Anything is possible, when you believe. These ladies completed the 75 Hard Challenge over the last 3 1/2 months! We could not be prouder of the mental triumph. 75 Hard is a transformative mental toughness program! It takes grit, fortitude, perseverance. 👍 Here are their experiences to INSPIRE you mentally, physically, and spiritually as we enter this full and exciting time of the year!

Lisa Irvin

Lisa day in and day out has been consistent. You will see her encouraging other ladies in TransFit and out walking the streets of 5 Points. She has clocked some miles these past months. Consistency is what leads to transformation over time.

When I first heard about 75 Hard, I thought, “no way I can do that”. After going home and thinking and praying about it, the next morning I was all in!
At first, the two workouts a day were rough. Then the gallon of water was hard, but after a few weeks,
it all became a part of my daily habit, and it was much more “doable”. Having a support group of others doing it together was huge! It made the hard days, much better, and was very motivational.
The program made me realize that
anything you set out to do is possible, if you put your heart into it and make a commitment to accomplish it. Honestly, I was a little sad when it was over, but it gave me healthy habits that I can and will carry forward in my daily life!”

Traci Britt

Traci loves a challenge and she attacked this one head on! We love her attitude of “doing hard things” makes me stronger. She was the greatest encourager along the way- we are so much stronger together!

Why did I do the 75 Hard challenge? Honestly, I just love a good challenge and I thrive on to do lists and pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

I based my 75 Hard Challenge on the acronym for SACRED
Stillness to know God
Attentiveness to hear God
Cruciformity to surrender to God
Revelation to see God
Examine to return to God
Doxology to thank God

This is from a book and bible study by Ann Voskamp called Waymaker. Some of what I learned was to turn to God and savor Him. I was determined if I was in need or want, I would turn to Him first. Attach to Him! God aches over any distance between us. “Sacrifice isn’t giving something up…it is detaching from one thing to attach to something greater.” I used this challenge to attach myself even more to Him. So getting more of Him was the best thing I got out of the challenge…the hardest thing was turning to Him when I was craving foods I couldn’t have or tired and falling asleep trying to knock out my reading or having to chug my water for the day. Remembering He can and does give me everything I need; He can fill me and satisfy me more than anything. I have to be reminded of this daily. It truly taught me I can do hard things and be thankful and give Him all the praise!

Maggie Eterno

"Earlier this year, I had a friend who did the 75 Hard Program. As I watched her complete it, it was inspired me. But honestly, I didn’t feel like I had the time to get it done.

Each year I choose a word that I feel the Lord has placed on my heart and this year, I chose the word healing for 2022. I’ve been battling a battle with anxiety and panic attacks for 18 years, but also within the last year I began to experience many other health issues. My gut was a mess, my anxiety that I had learned to manage and control had come back and I was experiencing really bad inflammation and neurological issues.

The first half of the year, things got worse instead of better and I questioned God. Why did you place this word on my heart? All of my symptoms were so much worse.

As I listened to a business podcast I normally listen to, the subject was on brain health. They had the brain doctor on the podcast and he shared how aspartame and Sucralose are poison for your brain. The entire time, I felt a tug on my heart. You see, years ago, I switched to all sugar free and diet products. I switched after I hired a fitness coach to help me reach my personal physical goals. I realized I could eat more and still get all the sweets while allowing my foods to fit into my diet plan which was counting macros.

As I listened to the podcast, I felt the Lord say, “Maggie, do you want healing? You have to do your part.” I immediately knew what he was asking me to do. So as I started my 75 Hard journey and within my plan, I also cut out all fake sugars.

Three weeks into the program, I went on a retreat with my new small group. So much of this experience was out of my comfort zone. Normally it would all send me in an anxious spiral. After reading the book, The Miracle Morning, I began doing affirmations and the mental strength I was gaining helped me choose to go on this retreat. I kept calling it my miracle weekend. And the weekend was just that! Between choosing to take my thoughts captive and choosing to trust that the Lord had already gone before me, I experienced a miracle. Going into the weekend, God placed two words on my heart: power and control. He made me see that I’ve been trying to control and have power over everything and everyone in my life. I agreed to go on a hike with two of my friends that weekend and as I sat on the top of the mountain, I felt the Lord asking me to release the need for power and control. It was the strongest pull in my heart that I’ve ever felt. I could feel my flesh fighting, but I’m the end I released it. Right there, on top of the mountain with God, I gave it all to Him.

I wish I could give you all the specific ways that the Lord has confirmed this, but they are too many to share. I do want to share one. On the mountain, my friend played some worship songs while we sat and enjoyed the Lord’s beauty. As I watched from the mountain top, I could see the peaks and valleys and saw how beautiful they were. The very first two songs that played were, Goodness of God and Abundantly more. In the second song, the first phrase was “there is healing in the power of the Lord most high.” And as I heard the word healing, something happened. I was changed.

🎄 5 Tips to Manage Holiday Parties This Year

Sweet friends,

The holiday season brings so many wonderful things to our lives! We get to spend time with our families and friends and celebrate the birth of our Savior. There’s so much to get excited about!

However, with these holiday celebrations comes holiday parties where we are surrounded by endless amounts of food! Often, we are surrounded by such homemade goodness that we can’t help but over eat, and then we feel guilty afterwards! Let’s not feel that way this holiday season!

Below are FIVE tips to help you navigate holiday parties this Christmas season!

orange-pomegranate-salad-close-1.jpg
  1. Drink a large glass of water before the party.

Drinking water can help you feel full for longer. Drink 1-2 glasses of water before you go to the party to help eliminate mindless snacking. You can also carry a glass of water with you at the party to give you something to hold and drink without reaching for unhealthy snacks!

2. Keep moving!

Go to the party with the mindset that the party is for fellowship and spending quality time with friends or family and isn’t about food! Make your way around the room talking and enjoying others’ company, and you won’t think about the treats!

Make sure you are exercising regularly! Stay on track with your exercise goals during the holiday season. Block off workout times in your schedule and don’t miss! When you are exercising regularly, you won’t want to undo all of the hard work that you have put in!

3. Eat a high-protein snack before the party.

A high-protein snack can help you curb your cravings and help you be full before you arrive at the party! After eating your snack, you will be full and satisfied and will be less likely to mindlessly snack while you are there. Often, people eat less in preparation of a big party to try to “save calories”, but this usually leads to overeating foods that will not satisfy or fuel your body in the long run! Good examples of high-protein snacks are:

  • 1/4 cup of nuts

  • 1/2 cup of trail mix

  • 1 cheese stick

  • 1 hard boiled egg

  • 1/2 cup of cooked edamame

  • Kind bars

  • Turkey roll-ups

  • Rice cake layered with nut butter and chopped walnuts

    4. Chew sugar free gum.

Chewing sugar-free gum is a great way to stop those sugar cravings! It will give you something to chew, but will save you the calories! Instead of reaching for that piece of chocolate or sweet treat, pop in a piece of sugar free gum!

    5. Bring a healthy snack or treat!

Bring something to the party that you know you can munch on without feeling guilty. Your friends will thank you, too! Some great options for healthy dishes are:

  • Lean meat and cheese trays

  • Fruit or vegetable trays

  • Homemade trail mix

  • One of our TransFit winter recipes!

  • Strawberry Edamame Salad

Who Needs Some Tips on How to Navigate Holiday Parties?! 🙋🏼

Hello sweet friend!

As we continue into this wonderful season, one of the most challenging things in our health journey can be staying on track when we go to holiday parties. We all know  parties are to enjoy friends, family but also there can be endless amounts of food. People gather and all bring dishes that are so tempting and we often go through a cycle of overeating and then feeling guilt after the party. Friend, let's not so this to yourself this holiday season!  Bring a healthy dish to share and choose wisely!

CWP_9621crop.jpg

Here are a few tips on how to have your best and healthiest holiday season yet.

  1. Focus on fellowship with family and friends! You are not there for the food. Yes, there will be a lot of food that only comes once a year but at the end of the day it is exactly that- food. Food was meant to nourish our bodies for service, not tempt us into over-indulgence and lead us to guilt. Go into your party knowing that this party is about fellowship and spending time with the ones you love.
  2. Drink a large glass of water and eat a high-protein snack before the party. Now, you will be satisfied from a healthy snack going into the party and much less likely to reach for empty calories and mindless snacks. I know often people will not eat all day to "save their calories" for the big party or meal, however this leads to over-consumption of foods that are not going to satisfy or fuel you in the long run! Prepare before hand so you can enter and exit this party feeling healthy and nourished. Having victory!
  3. Bring a healthy snack or treat that everyone can enjoy and so you will know you have a healthy option available. Some ideas are: lean meat and cheese trays, fruit and vegetable trays, homemade trail mix or glazed nuts. Below is an easy recipe that you can take that is sure to be a crowd favorite and leave everyone feeling great and not weighed down and guilty!
  4. Keep moving! Stay on track with your fitness goals by continuing to schedule your workouts as usual. Block of these times in your schedule, so you don't skip a workout. When family is town, take walks together! Park further away from stores to get in extra steps!
  5. Begin with the end in mind! Make everyday count! January is only a couple weeks away! Need some extra accountability? We're here for YOU and believe in YOU! The TransFit team wants to see you reach your goals! We want to see you get your $20 back in January at the end of our Holiday Extravaganza! Remember: consistency is key! Remind yourself daily to focus on Jesus the reason for the season. You can't control all of your circumstances, but you can control where you keep your focus-- on Him!

Here are some great healthy recipes to take to your next holiday party!

IMG_0017.JPG

Strawberry Edamame Salad

  • 2 cups organic baby spinach
  • 1 cup chopped kale
  • 1/2 cup chopped strawberries
  • 1/3 cup edamame
  • Tbsp. goat cheese (or feta or whatever your favorite is!)
  • 1/4 cup toasted, chopped pecans

Combine all ingredients together. Drizzle a tablespoon (or two) of your favorite dressing on top. I like a tablespoon of olive oil and balsamic vinegar! Don’t forget to make an extra salad or two for lunches this week!

IMG_9955.JPG

Fruit Kabobs

Perfect kid friendly healthy snack! Add one marshmallow, strawberry, banana, and grape for the perfect Santa kabob!

Holiday Grain Bowl

  • 1 cup cooked wild rice
  • 1 cup cooked quinoa
  • 6 radishes
  • 1/2 cup roasted chickpeas
  • 1/4 cup roasted pumpkin seeds
  • 1/3 cup reduced sugar craisins
  • 2 cups salad greens of choice
  • 1 shallot sliced
  • Fresh basil
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp green goddess dressing

First, make sure your rice and quinoa are cooked according to package directions. Slice your radishes and shallots. Arrange all ingredients into two bowls. Garnish with basil and pepper. Drizzle with green goddess dressing.

Take this opportunity to practice your will power, and then notice how great your body and spirit feel after the party because you have experienced all of the great fellowship without overindulging. Parties should be filled with laughter, fun and time spent with the ones that you love.

Now you may be wondering what to do if you do get off track and have one too many pieces or Christmas candy or dessert. Let it go- it is in the past. Clean the slate! Realize that this health journey you are on is not a diet. No friends, this is a lifestyle and sometimes you will face challenges! We encourage you in these times to remember why you started this lifestyle. Think for a second on all of the positive changes you made this holiday season in compared to your last. Think of how far you have come and all the progress you have made. Now with a renewed mind and spirit prepare to have your best and healthiest day tomorrow and drink plenty of water and green tea to help purify your body so you can feel your best!

You can do this sweet friend! We are praying for you and can't wait to hear all the success that you all have and how God blesses your holiday season!

Blessings,

Team TransFit

Let's Finish This Year Strong! Check out our December Client Spotlight- Fran Hahn

Happy Friday, sweet friend!

It has been such an awesome week in the studio as we start this month! This week we challenged each of you to try the TransFIVE sugar challenge. If you didn't get to try the challenge this week, challenge yourself to complete it next week! It's never too late to start!

Today we want to introduce you to one of our clients, Fran Hahn who has taken on our challenges and seen transformation, as a result! Fran inspires each one of us at TransFit when she walks into the studio with her bright smile! She makes the best smoothies and always encourages US by sharing her favorite healthy snacks and recipes! Another quality we love about our friend, Fran, is her commitment to whole body health, not just exercise!

unnamed-3.jpg

The week after Christmas in 1983, I got lost from my group of Auburn friends at a conference with about 20,000 other college students, and sat next to this hot, redheaded guy. One of the first things I said to him was: “If we got married, we would have all redheaded kids!” We did and we do! I have four redheaded kids, three daughters and a son, two sons-in-law (not redheaded), and a sweet granddaughter (not a redhead either).

unnamed-1.jpg

Paul and I have moved twelve times in our thirty-one years of marriage. We are so happy to have landed in Athens in the summer of 2016. Although I am a Tiger in a Dawg world, this is for sure one of my favorite places we have called home.

My good friend, Laura Wilfong, brought me to TransFit about a year ago, and I have loved coming ever since. Working out here is consistently one of my weekly highlights.

Believe it or not, I was the 1981 Alabama state high school champion in the two-mile run. And since then, I have tried it all when it comes to fitness: from Jane Fonda’s aerobics tapes in the 80’s, to long distance running and swimming in the 90’s, to track workouts with the family in the 00’s, to CrossFit and hot yoga this decade. I have pretty much tried it all! As I grew a bit older, I fell into an ugly spin cycle of working out hard, getting injured, resting a little, then diving back in, only to get injured again. And I have tried every wacky diet plan known to mankind.

575900_379940362028408_1506866365_n.jpg

So, coming here to TransFit has brought some much-needed consistency, balance and challenge in my approaches to food and exercise. TransFit incorporates exercises which don’t kill my body, but strengthen it. And, I am encouraged to stay on course with my diet.

My big challenge at this point in my journey is in being consumed with how I look. I want a 25-year-old body at 55. And that just isn’t going to happen, no matter how hard I work or obsess. I am learning how to lean into Jesus and be thankful that I have the privilege to exercise, and to enjoy him as I do. And though it may sound silly, drinking my daily water allotment is always a struggle for me!

Aside from running a few races and just staying in the game at my age, I don’t have any huge fitness achievements. But, Jesus has been good to me; he meets in sweet ways as I work out, and in all parts of my life. I am truly grateful.

  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 1 cup hummus
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil

Lay the four chicken breasts evenly on top, then cover each chicken breast with the hummus so that the entire breast is covered. Squeeze the juice of one lemon over the chicken and vegetables. Then sprinkle the pan with smoked paprika. Thinly slice the remaining lemon, and place the slices in between the chicken and vegetables.
