✝️ Happy Easter Weekend! Celebrate with New Recipes!

Sweet friends,

We want to wish you all a Happy Easter weekend on this Good Friday! Our hope for you this Easter is to enjoy your family and celebrate Christ’s resurrection!

As we've been celebrating "Holy Week" and following the April reading plan from the Gospel of Luke, we remember that today on Good Friday, the day Jesus was crucified, God was at work. The darkness of this day would be overshadowed by joy a couple of days later with the discovery of Jesus' resurrection. Luke 24: 6-7

He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: “The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.” As we celebrate Easter this Sunday, may we know by faith the forgiveness of our sins, a life of purpose meant to bring glory to God, and everlasting joy that does not end with death, because He is Risen!

Happy Easter to all our amazing friends and clients! Please keep following along with us in our April Bible reading plan. Download the free ebook below!

Honor the amazing body that God has given you and fuel yourself with nutritious treats this Easter! We challenge you to step away from the candy and overconsumption, and instead focus on the real reason for the holiday— Jesus' resurrection and the blessings He has given you! Below are four healthy Easter recipes you can enjoy without feeling sluggish later! You can find way more recipes like these on our website HERE.

Try these recipes for your Easter celebration and share them with us on social media! Follow us on Instagram HERE and Facebook HERE!

Try these wall postures to reset and revive your body after a run or workout! These poses are restorative yoga postures that allow the mind and the body to relax, relieving stress and tension. Here are 3 key benefits of doing these postures:

  1. Relaxation: These poses in combination with controlled breathing lead to a slowing down within your body. This exhibits itself in a lowered heart rate which elicits a relaxation response and, in turn, helps lower anxiety, stress and insomnia.

  2. Stretches hamstrings and lower back: The angle of the body in these poses reduces the curve of the lumbar spine, which will elongate and stretch the back muscles. In poses like Legs Up the Wall, the closer your hips are to the wall, the more stretch you'll create in your hamstrings.

  3. Facilitates venous drainage and increases circulation: Elevating the legs promotes drainage from excess fluid build-up. In addition, gravity assists circulation by facilitating the return of blood back to the heart.

✨ Amazing April Client Spotlight!

Sweet friends,

We are so excited to come ALIVE with you in the studio this April! If you haven’t read our last blog about all of our exciting April news yet, be sure to check it out HERE. Her bright smile lights up the room and her hardworking spirit in TransFit’s morning and afternoon sessions is contagious. She continues to transform her body, mind, and spirit and is such an incredible example of TransFit inspiration!

April Client Spotlight - LeAnn Cleveland

Growing up, I was always the ‘big girl.’ I wouldn’t necessarily say I struggled with my weight. I didn’t struggle. It was part of who I was – part of my identity. Before I graduated from college, I ran into a friend who had lost quite a bit of weight through Weight Watchers. Inspired by her success, I joined and began my journey toward a healthier lifestyle. I learned a lot about nutrition those first few months. I also discovered exercise – walking, step aerobics, and strength training.

IMG_8840_600x.jpg

My weight has fluctuated over the years. Life got busy. I got older. In February 2018, I was ready for a change. I rejoined WW and began eating healthier and exercising. I have an elliptical I use at home regularly as well as exercise DVDs (Pilates, yoga, and cardio). However, I missed working out with others. The next month, I attended a school function where a silent auction was taking place. A TransFit package that included 4 Transformer classes was one of the items. I bid and won. To say I was a bit intimidated would be an understatement. In fact, I waited until the package was about to expire before I finally went. But I went, and I loved it! I had never been to a gym that provided such encouragement. I honestly don’t think calling TransFit a ‘gym’ is an apt description. I’ve been a member of many gyms over the years and this place is different. At TransFit, you are inspired by women without feeling the need to compare yourself to them. I try to attend sessions twice per week and workout at home 3-4 days per week. My goals are to exercise 5-6 days per week total, eat greens daily, and drink at least 64 oz. of water each day.

IMG_9003_600x.jpg

I love how TransFit challenges and stretches me. I am a tutor to students with learning disabilities and other learning challenges. I am constantly asking them to do hard things. I am a big believer in lifelong learning, so I realize that I have to be willing to put myself out there and do hard things. God has created each of us to run a race— a race that at times can be challenging. I can’t run your race, and you can’t run mine, but we can run alongside one another to encourage and inspire. This is how I view TransFit, an incredibly unique place that encourages and inspires.

We are so moved by LeAnn’s testimony and are glad to be a part of her journey! We hope it inspires you to set and accomplish your own goals. We are here to serve you in any way we can!

Screen_Shot_2019-04-08_at_9.08.37_AM_600x.png

Grilled Salmon

LeAnn loves warmer weather and grilling season. Try her favorite grilled salmon recipe!

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 - 2 lbs salmon

  • 1 tsp ginger

  • 1 tsp minced garlic

  • 1 scallion, chopped

  • 1/4 cup honey

  • 1/3 cup soy sauce

  • 1/3 cup orange juice

Instructions:

  • Mix ingredients well

  • Pour over salmon and marinate for 1 (or more) hour(s)

  • Grill or bake at 400 degrees until fish flakes easily

  • Enjoy!

It’s time to set a new goal for this week! Try some of LeAnn’s goals by exercising 5 days this week, getting in 80 ounces of water, and increasing your vegetable intake. After a workout, try our Wall Postures yoga flow to stretch, relax, and reset! Download it HERE.

April Bible Reading Plan

“I talk about God whispers and God winks often and I know He leads us through these little nudges. I know for certain that nothing happens by accident, but some days I want Him to speak audibly to me! I want and need clear direction. But then, I realize He is asking me to trust Him fully.

A wise friend recently told me, “Caroline,
if you want to hear God speak to you, read the word of God out loud!” I don’t know why this one sentence hit me so hard. The Bible is the written word of God and truth transforms! We have to read it, say it, and live it.

The more I read God’s word, the more I feel its power and I began to understand God’s love for me. Today, with all the dismal headlines in the news, I find hope on the pages of His word and
I find joy that sustains me in my weak moments regardless of my circumstances.

Every time I make time to open the Bible it surprises me! God’s Word is alive and active because the Holy Spirit brings it to life! The Bible is a living book with a timeless message.
The more we read it, the more God’s words fill us up and can pour out of us unto others.  We find wisdom and guidance for how to deal with our busy lives, peace for our troubled hearts, and hope for the hardest moments.

I want to challenge you to open God’s word this month and dive in with me.
The Gospel of Luke is one we can read over and over again and find the wisdom and comfort we need. Join me and our TransFit community this month as we push ourselves out of our comfort zones and immerse ourselves in truth. See how you are transformed by this experience!” -Caroline Ward

As Easter approaches this month, we encourage you to join the TransFit community in our April Bible Reading Plan! We will read through the book of Luke in one month and will transform our minds with His word. Prayer Walks

We have exciting news! TransFit’s Director of Spiritual Development and Outreach, Pam Adams, will be leading prayer walks this month building up to our Fit for a Miracle 5K! Starting this Wednesday, April 3rd, meet outside the TransFit studio Wednesdays at 9:30 am where Pam will lead us in prayer and meditation as we walk the Miracle Mile route twice (2 miles total).

The goal of prayer walking is to “pray onsite with insight” as we will simply be using our senses to engage mind, body, and spirit in the ministry of prayer, keeping alert for how the Lord leads us to pray for the Fit for a Miracle 5k and the community around us where we will “set our foot” (Joshua 1:3) along the routes. Our greatest prayer is that God will be glorified as we seek the be a blessing to others in the ministry of prayer and service.

Email Pam HERE if you have any questions!

Mother and Daughters Client Spotlight You Are Going to LOVE!

Sweet friends,

Thank you for challenging yourself to run the race with perseverance this week! Wow, we had an amazing week in the studio!  Today, we have the honor and joy of highlighting three of our amazing clients! These three are special, as they are a mother and twin daughters client spotlight! Elizabeth, Cynthia, and Cindy are our April client spotlights, each with their own personal transformation story!

These TransFit ladies will inspire you to keep giving your best one hour, one day at a time to live transformed

IMG_4059.JPG

Cindy Lester's transformation story:

I’ve always been an outdoors “Tomboy” growing up climbing trees, riding bikes, playing baseball and football as a kid…. And I have played Tennis and golf most of my life.  About eight years ago, at 60 years old, playing golf at the Country Club, I was “just slightly” in the woods on one of my drives and slipped on a tree root, breaking my fibula. After that, I started therapy and a workout routine that continues today. I started then and have continued cardio workout at the club for an hour a day, 3 times a week. I generally try to do TransFit two days a week, tennis one or two days a week and golf when it’s pretty (fair weather golfer). I love tennis and we’re on a 4.0, 65 and over tennis team that will go to state in October – just because we have no local competition.  Our tennis team did go all the way to Nationals back in 2009 in Palm Springs, California and came in second place Nationally…. Thanks to everyone else on the team! I have really enjoyed the weight exercises and just feeling more fit after starting TransFit classes… I continue to work professionally at Synovus Trust Company, managing the local Athens division and really enjoy meeting and getting to know new clients and people through my work. And finally, I’m ABSOLUTELY most proud of my girls, their families, and their personal accomplishments.

Cindy and her grandkids!

Elizabeth Johnson's transformation story:

Although I have been active in sports all my life, medical school and residency seemed to take my time and slow my focus on exercising. My husband and I moved back to Athens after finishing my residency in Internal Medicine, and I had just given birth to our son, Cole.  Again, it seemed being a new mom and working to build a practice put a daily exercise routine on the back burner.  Finally, Cynthia, my twin sister, moved back to Athens as well.  We have always encouraged and challenged each other. About 6 years ago, we started doing home programs together at lunch at my sister’s house. We kept each other accountable and would text daily about which workout we were going to do when finished seeing patients for the morning.  It got me back exercising 5 days a week and I had so much energy. Even on weekends, Cynthia and I would encourage each other to make up a day if we had missed during the week.

Elizabeth Johnson and family

Elizabeth Johnson and family

In June of 2017, Cynthia had given my mom and I a gift card to TransFit for Christmas, and I finally used it one Saturday morning. Cynthia had already been going so she could show me the ropes.  I got in several Saturday morning classes and loved it, but it was only 1 day a week and I would exercise on my own during the weekday.  I kept telling myself I could never make 5:30 am work. Even Caroline gently suggested I try a 5:30 am class.  Cynthia again had recently tried the 5:30 am class, and I knew if she could make it work with getting the kids to school then I could too. I remember not sleeping at all that first October night I knew I was going at 5:30 am because I was so nervous about making it home, getting dressed myself, and getting the kids up and ready. However, since October I have been going to TransFit most Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings and I love it. It starts my day off right and keeps me more motivated during the day!

unnamed.png

Exercise isn’t everything though, it's a piece to transformation. Having my son in travel baseball and daughter in gymnastics makes for eating out a lot during the weekend. This can blow an entire week of hard work. I try, although definitely not always, to make good choices.  I am better some weeks than others. I have started packing a healthy snack bag thanks to Katie Woodall’s great suggestions recently. I love the Oatmega bars, Chomps beef sticks, and Organic fit bars. Plus, my children now will go to the snack bag first instead of asking for money at the concession stands, so they are getting less junk. I have a small refrigerator in my office that I can keep Greek yogurt and cut veggies to snack on at work. I have started getting weekly meals from Perfect Portions with Kaeti Shurling during the week to help keep me accountable with weeknight sporting events. My current goal is the late night snacks or meals. Many weekend nights, we are driving home from a tournament at 10 pm and my son needs something to eat after his game. At that hour, fast food is about the only thing open. I’m tired and this is when I make my worse food decisions. If home, I probably would be asleep.  So, my goal going into more Spring and Summer sports is to make better food decisions.

Cynthia Shepherd's transformation story:

I grew up in Watkinsville. My mother, Cindy Lester, and twin sister, Elizabeth Johnson are also clients at Transfit. I grew up in a very active family. Elizabeth and I started playing tennis at age 5. We were very competitive and played tournaments growing up. We eventually played in high school at OCHS at  No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. We also played basketball and volleyball. Learning to study and do homework with a busy after school sports schedule was something that definitely prepared me to for the years ahead in medical school, residency and fellowship. As a family growing up, my parents also instilled the importance of being active together as a family. Despite both parents working full-time jobs, they supported us at every event, home and away. We enjoyed playing golf, water skiing and going for long walks in Madison with my grandmother.

My husband and I moved back to Watkinsville, our hometown, in July 2011. At that point, we had a 3-year-old daughter and a 9-month-old son. I was not back to my pre-baby weight and this affected my mood and outlook about myself. I started doing home workouts and ultimately encouraged my sister to be my accountability partner. We would work out at lunch together 4-5 days a week. Still, I was not happy with my weight and knew that my diet was not where it should be. I signed up for Caroline’s Nutritional program in the Summer/Spring of 2013 and loved the weekly meal plans and grocery lists. Her meals are healthy for the whole family and easy to cook. While exercising consistently 5 days a week and following my daily meal plan, I was able to get to my goal weight.

unnamed-3.jpg

I started working out with Transfit approximately 2 years ago and love the Transformer workouts. I initially started going 1-2 days per week and worked out at home the remaining days. Now I have found the 5:30 AM class fits great with my schedule and helps me start my day more alert and on a positive note. I usually work out 3 days a week at Transfit and 2-3 days a week at my home gym. I love HITT training, running and interval training. My husband has done a number of Ironmans and ½ Ironmans, so he encouraged me to do the Tri-to-Beat Cancer’s Duathlon a few years ago.  I find working out with others is very motivational and love the positive inspiration and encouraging smiles from all the Transfit trainers.  I have definitely gained muscle and strength. It’s also pretty awesome to work out with my 67 y/o mother at Transfit on some afternoons. My children know that if I don’t get to exercise, I am grumpy. They see that exercise is an important part of my life and have learned more about making healthy choices.

As an oncologist, I stress to my patients that exercise and eating a heart-healthy diet with plenty of lean protein and veggies is the best way to fight and prevent cancer. Exercise also relieves stress and anxiety and can also help prevent other diseases such as Alzheimer’s dementia (particularly interval training), cardiac disease and osteoporosis.

In regards to meal planning, I have found that using Kaeti Sterling’s Perfect Portions has been a wonderful time savior for my family and a nutritional way to feed my family quickly when I get home late from work.  My family’s favorite recipes include turkey meatballs and turkey burgers.

Spring is an amazing time of the year for running or brisk walking. Try to get in that morning jog or evening walk, since the sun stays up much later! While training for any race, it's easy to just focus on building up mileage or doing interval training. However, it is also beneficial to include some strength training to properly develop your muscles and help prevent injuries. We have developed sessions and a home workout with runners/walkers in mind! Try this NEW inner thigh workout to get those legs ready for a nice long walk or run!

HIIT workouts allow you to keep your heart rate up and burn more fat in less time.

Transform "Hard Core" Ab Workout

Hello sweet friends! It's time to finish April strong and come alive! This week we want to challenge you to come alive through a touching ab workout! You can add in this ab workout with our April challenge! You can find this workout on our YouTube page HERE

CWP_0090crop.jpg

Abs are one of the major areas where our diet plays a key role. Everyone always wants to work on their abs, "love handles," and the core of the body. Your core is a major part of all movement. Having a strong core will help you be able to do every day tasks better and with ease. We've got a great ab workout for you that, when paired with a healthy diet, will torch unwanted belly fat and assist in creating a super strong core!

Four key components to a strong core

  1. Exercise- Doing a healthy balance of strength training and cardio is essential to toning your mid-section! You'll notice at the end of this awesome workout there is a jump rope minute! This minute of cardio gets your heart rate UP and helps you burn more fat!
  2. Diet- Eating a balanced, healthy diet is KEY to maintaining a lean midsection! Fill your diet with greek leafy vegetables, lean protein and other nutrient dense foods to reveal those abdominal muscles!
  3. Sleep- Rest is essentail to burning fat! Allow your body recovery time in order for it to burn fat most effectively!
  4. Stress management- For many reasons, stress is detrimental to maintaining a trim waistline. When we are stressed, we not only tend to exercise less and eat less healthy- we cause stress on our bodies which hinders it from burning fat.

We are ending this month strong as we advance our entire body health in ways that we may never have before. Remember friends it is not about being perfect - it is about being better than you were yesterday! Keep making awesome progress and invest in your health this month. Please let us know how we can help you reach your goals! For more recipes and workouts, please click HERE to find our Transform section of our website!

Blessings,

Amazing Client Spotlight- Sara Swann

HAPPY FRIYAY!

Each of you are COMING ALIVE this April! We hope that you have joined us for the April Arms Challenge!  Give you best today and complete the challenge stronger than when you began!

Today, we want to share the story of one of our sweet clients, Sara Swann! Sara's smile lights up a room and her dedication to a healthy lifestyle is inspiring! One word I would love to describe Sara is commitment! She is committed to giving her whole heart to her workouts, her running, her family, and her job!  Over the year, she has transformed in body, mind, and spirit and is a testimony to making the most of every opportunity!

Thank you Sara for living transformed and being such a joy to get to know!  Please enjoy Sara's story below about her total body, mind, and spirit transformation.

I first started my journey at TransFit almost one year ago, in May of 2016. My sister in law, Allison Cass, had been attending classes and I could tell a big difference in her, she was transforming her body, becoming stronger and healthier, striving for better overall health and it showed. She encouraged me to try a Transformer class and I finally did, and I couldn't be happier and more thankful to her! I have exercised really since high school in various formats, mostly attending gyms, doing cardio, spin and strength training classes. I really wasn't unhappy but sometimes felt like I was in a rut and wanted something more. I decided to try TransFit and WOW, what an amazing experience!. Here, it wasn't just about getting your workout done to move on with your day, it was a total mind, body experience that was the BEST way to start my day. From day one, I felt the encouragement from Caroline and the sense of community with the other women. It is such an encouraging and motivating environment, and it made me push myself to do my best each time. I thoroughly enjoyed the high intensity of the Transformer class followed by the peaceful stretch and inspirational message to close out class. I remember having tears in my eyes, yes tears of joy, from an overwhelming total mind and body experience that first day. Now I try to attend 2-3 transformer sessions per week.

I have also thoroughly enjoyed Lisa's running class on Tuesday mornings. I have always liked getting up and working out at 5:30 since its really the best and only time that fits my schedule and gets my day started off on the right foot. I have run on and off for many years, but never had any one show me proper form or body mechanics to help improve my technique. The track workouts are really fun and running with a group is encouraging and motivating. I'm always so inspired by all the women that get up early, put their tennis shoes on and hit the track to do something good for their bodies, and what an awesome way to see the sunrise with this wonderful community of women. I had run one half marathon in the past, pre-kids, and Allison and I decided we wanted to run the Chick Fil A half this spring (her first half). Lisa sent us a training schedule and we did each week together, holding one another accountable. I've never been one to brave the freezing temps or windy days for an outdoor run (I'd just take the easy way and hit the treadmill ;)) but there was such a sense of bonding and accomplishment to set a goal and stick to it and doing it with my sister in law was unbelievable. Thanks to Lisa and Caroline's encouragement and tips, we made it through our training and completed the Chick Fil A half just a little over 2 wks ago. They were there with us the whole time, even during the race, cheering us on, and I cannot tell you how much it meant to Allison and I to have such inspiring coaches and friends to share this experience with. We are now hooked, and are ready to find our next half marathon to tackle.

I cannot say enough about my experience at TransFit. I enjoy that it isn't just a place to exercise, but a total health experience to truly transform all aspects of your health. From healthy recipe ideas that I can cook for my family (even in a short amount of time for us working moms) to encouraging scripture that keeps me uplifted, to the accountability and friendships I've made. Caroline, Lisa, Katie and the women at TransFit have been such a blessing to me and I'm grateful to Caroline that she was lead to create this special environment for the women in the Athens community.

Enjoying a Healthy, Joy Filled Easter! 🐣🌸

Easter is coming up, and for many of us that means a big family brunch followed by a massive helping of candy — think Cadbury Eggs, Peeps, and lots of jelly beans. While a few Easter treats are not “TERRIBLE” for you, weighing a basket down with chocolate, caramel eggs, and jelly beans can be the gateway to mindlessly snacking on candy for the rest of the week which, as you know, leads to you & your family feeling sluggish and groggy. Whether you're making a basket for a friend, little one, or someone special in your life, there are definitely some more fun and healthy ideas to sneak in along with a few pieces of candy.

Our hope for you this Easter will be to enjoy your family and celebrate Christ’s resurrection!  Honor the amazing body that God has given you and fuel yourself with nutritious treats this Easter! This Easter we challenge you to step away from the candy and overconsumption, and instead focus on the real reason for the holiday Jesus' resurrection, and the blessings He has given you!

What's all the buzz about Probiotics?

What an amazing start to April! You have come ALIVE this week friends! Thank you!

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of hearing from our TransFit team and special guest and gut health specialist, Jennifer Rickard. We learned about the importance of meal prepping and all the reasons we need to keep our gut healthy. Today, we want to share with you some of the key takeaways from our Lunch and Learn discussion!

Gut health is such an important part of whole body health. All diseases begin in the gut. 90% of our cells are bacteria cells and 10% are human cells. Thousands of species of bacteria all have different functions. Some of the bacteria digest foods, some produce different vitamins and hormones, some respond to medicines and infections, some control your blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and some control your risk for obesity or diabetes. These bacteria control almost every process in your body! Our brain and gut are connected through the enteric nervous system. The belly and brain are connected physically and biochemically. So, this means that the types of bacteria in our guts control the way we think, behave, and feel.

It is so important to maintain a healthy balance of good and bad bacteria. There are many reasons how the delicate balance of a healthy gut is compromised. We eat diets of sugar, processed foods, and alcohol. We consume antibiotics and have too much stress. The above areas create an imbalance causing the bad bacteria to shift from a single cell of yeast into a mycelial fungus. Thus, causeing gut diseases and other problems in our bodies.

So what can we do to keep it balanced and try to regain gut health?

  • Cutting back on sugar, processed foods, antibiotics, NSAIDS, steroids, and synthetic hormones
  • Cut back on stress. Stress is harmful to our health and is actually the second cause of unbalanced gut flora.
  • Read your labels to decrease sugar and processed foods
  • Eat whole, live, raw foods
  • Supplement with a quality probiotic (kombucha, supplement, fermented foods)

Be sure to avoid probiotic supplements that have sugar or glucose in the ingredient list. We can also get moderate levels of probiotics from a healthy diet rich in cultured organic products like yogurt, goat’s cheese, kefir and buttermilk. Many common leafy greens are also excellent sources of probiotics. The best greens for increasing probiotics include chlorellawheat grass, and spirulina. The advantage of getting these disease-fighting bacteria from green sources is that these foods are also extremely high in immune system-stimulating vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

5 key benefits associated with the daily intake of probiotics include:

  • Enhanced immune system response
  • Increased ability to digest food
  • Alleviates many common digestive disorders
  • Increases the ability to assimilate the nutrients from food
  • Reduces negative affects of taking many types of antibiotics

Go out today and pick up some Probiotics, your stomach will thank you!

Flora-Flourishing Meal in a Jar

This recipe has all components of healthy meal: protein, whole grain, vegetable, fruit, and healthy fat. The natural yogurt and kefir provide a generous variety of gut-friendly bacteria and yeast. The oats and chia seeds provide food (probiotics) for your gut bacteria and in total, the recipe contains 11 grams of nutrient rich fiber. To round out the meal, add a serving of dark green or red vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup plain Kefir
  • 1/3 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1 teaspoon real maple syrup

  • 1/2 cup frozen mixed berries

Place frozen mixed berries in jar on top of yogurt mixture. Add remaining yogurt mixture. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired. Top with almonds. Refrigerate overnight or up to two days.
