  • 1 tbsp onion powder

  • 1 1/2 mustard powder

Strawberries Dipped in Chocolate Love

Ingredients:

  • 8oz of washed strawberries

  • 3oz of 70%+ dark chocolate — look for HU Kitchen, Taza, Pure 7, or Pascha Organic bars!

  • 1 tsp avocado oil

Directions:

Wash the chilled strawberries and pat dry with a paper towel. Break the chocolate bar into small chunks, place in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30-second increments, stirring after each microwave session. Add the avocado oil into the chocolate. Dip each strawberry into the melted chocolate. Lift and twist around to get rid of any excess chocolate. Place chocolate-covered strawberries on a lined tray or plate. Chill the strawberries in the fridge for 4 minutes before serving.

Heart-Healthy Foods

  1. Hemp Hearts are the "heart" of a shelled hemp seed. They are rich in protein and have the almost highest balance of proteins, fats, vitamins, and enzymes. They have been shown to decrease blood pressure, as well as lower the risks of colon and prostate cancer. Sprinkle hemp hearts on your salad, yogurt, or smoothie.

  2. Berries are a source of micronutrients and fiber. They support your heart through decreased activity of carbohydrate digestive enzymes and inhibit inflammatory gene expression and foam cell formation. Raspberries are the highest in fiber, lowest in sugar fruit! Enjoy!

  3. Leafy Greens contain nitrate content. This nitrate content allows the heart to pump blood more efficiently and allows for overall better blood flow.

  4. Avocado is full of healthy fats and contains many vital nutrients and fibers that your body and heart need. Avocado offers nutrients so that you can have a healthy heart!

  5. Beets are full of healthy nutrients, like calcium, iron, potassium, and protein. Beets contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents which have shown to reduce the risk of some cancers. Drinking beet juice has also shown to improve cardiorespiratory endurance and increases overall efficiency so this will help you get through your workouts!

  6. Tomatoes have nutrients that are found to help prevent cardiovascular disease. Additionally, tomatoes have nutrients that can protect and reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.

💪🏼Power Duo: Strength Training AND HIIT🔥

Screen Shot 2020-02-03 at 11.07.40 AM.png

Sweet Friends,

February is off to a great start! Let's work to reach the goals that we have set for this month—step outside of your comfort zone. Try incorporating Strength Training and High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts 3-5x per week to reach your maximum potential.

TransFit is so unique because it provides a combination of both strength training and HIIT workouts. These are two workouts that will allow you to transform—body, mind, and spirit.

You may be thinking, “doesn’t lifting weights make me ‘bulky’” or, “I thought I should only be doing hours of cardio to reach my goals.” Thank goodness those aren’t true. We want to clear up these misconceptions!

Below are some key details and benefits to help you understand why we as women should and need to build strength training AND HIIT into our fitness plans.

Basics of Strength Training

Suddenly, dumbbells sound like a smart idea! Strength training involves resistance bands and balls, hand weights, barbells, and even your own body weight in order to boost your metabolism and lean out your body to create a sculpted look. Strength training is just what your body needs to fight the loss of muscle, bone mass and strength that comes with age.

Screen Shot 2020-02-03 at 11.05.52 AM.png

Basics of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

High-intensity interval training, or HIIT for short, was named one of the top fitness trends in the world for 2020, based on an annual survey by the American College of Sports Medicine. These are the best workouts for developing a healthy heart because HIIT is comprised of short, hard bouts of cardio exercise—anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes in length—broken up by brief recovery periods. Workouts may involve jumping, lateral movements, sprints, plyometrics, and quick bodyweight segments. This workout is designed for women of all ages and ability levels at TransFit

Screen Shot 2020-02-03 at 11.04.57 AM.png

Key Benefits of Strength Training

  • Improved body composition & increase lean body mass

  • Increased metabolic efficiency (burn fat!)

  • Increased bone density

  • Decreased psychological stress

  • Increased energy levels and mood

  • Increase balance

  • Increase flexibility

3 Ways HIIT Can Help You Live Transformed:

  1. Lose abdominal fat: In a study of sedentary women, 20 minutes of HIIT were compared with 40 minutes of steady-state exercise, and the HIIT subjects were the only ones who lost fat— primarily excess abdominal fat!

2. Protect your heart: Research shows, depending on how fit you are when you begin, HIIT can boost your VO2 max (how much oxygen you can use) up to 46 percent in 24 weeks. It can also increase your stroke volume (how much blood your heart pumps out per beat) by 10 percent after eight weeks of training and significantly lower your resting heart rate.

3. Recharge your cells and boost your hormones: HIIT is proven to make more proteins for your energy-producing mitochondria, which helps slow down aging and boost youth hormones! It fires up the production of your body’s growth hormones that help you maintain muscle and burn fat for hours after you’re done, and it lowers insulin resistance for better blood sugar control.

🔥 The New HIIT Workout Will Transform Your Metabolism!

IMG_2187_600x.jpg

Sweet friends,

We hope February is off you a great start for you! We have some exciting things going on in the studio this week for Valentine’s Day, so make sure you’re following us on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date!

We wanted to share the importance of High-Intensity Interval Training and how HIIT can help you reach your goals and transform your body, mind, and spirit! Each of our TransFormer sessions in the studio this month will have multiple High-Intensity Intervals throughout the strength workout and we have dedicated sessions for HIIT Cardio workouts every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30!

High-intensity interval training, or HIIT for short, was named one of the top fitness trends in the world for 2019, based on an annual survey by the American College of Sports Medicine. HIIT is comprised of short, hard bouts of cardio exercise—anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes in length—broken up by brief recovery periods.

IMG_2187_600x.jpg

How hard is hard? That depends on the interval length and your body, but the key is to go as hard as you can for the duration of the effort. So, you’re working in your VO2 max zone, or about 90-95% of your max heart rate (or a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10) for the duration of the high interval.

Then you recover - your bring your heart rate down.
How much recovery you take between intervals depends on your goals. Short intervals are usually paired with equally short or even shorter recovery periods so your body can adapt to repeated maximal efforts. And because your heart rate stays elevated during the recovery periods, your aerobic energy system gets a training benefit, as well.

IMG_2191_600x.jpg

New studies on the benefits of HIIT make the news regularly. Take, for example, this one from the November 2018 issue of American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology. Researchers found that just two minutes of sprint interval training (in this case, four 30-second max-effort sprints followed by four and a half minutes of recovery for a total of 20 minutes) improved mitochondrial function—when your cells can change fuel to energy quickly—just as well as 30 minutes of moderate exercise in a group of active men and women. In other words, going ALL out for two minutes of really hard INTERVAL training can give you the same fitness benefits as a 30 minute steady, moderate pace workout.

IMG_2192_600x.jpg

No surprise, HIIT training is outstanding for your cardiovascular system. Research shows, depending on how fit you are when you begin, HIIT can boost your VO2 max (how much oxygen you can use) up to 46 percent in 24 weeks. It can also increase your stroke volume (how much blood your heart pumps out per beat) by 10 percent after eight weeks of training and significantly lower your resting heart rate. ♥️

It also makes your body a furnace of a fat burner. 🔥HIIT fires up production of your body’s growth hormones that help you maintain muscle and burn fat for hours after you’re done, and it lowers insulin resistance for better blood sugar control.

And it does more than benefit your body! HIIT is amazing for your mind. Research shows that high-intensity workouts improve cognitive function and increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) more than an easier exercise. BDNF is essential for learning, memory, and mood regulation, and your brain uses it to repair and maintain brain cells.

IMG_2193_600x.jpg

3 Ways HIIT Can Help You Live Transformed:

  1. Lose abdominal fat: In a study of sedentary women, 20 minutes of HIIT were compared with 40 minutes of steady-state exercise, and the HIIT subjects were the only ones who lost fat— primarily excess abdominal fat!

2. Protect your heart: A study of nearly 5000 people with heart disease showed that HIIT did more to protect them from future heart problems than moderate workouts.

3. Recharge your cells and boost your hormones: HIIT is proven to make more proteins for your energy-producing mitochondria, which helps slow down aging and boost youth hormones!

Meet our new personal trainer, Eliza Harris!

“Hi TransFit Family! My name is Eliza Harris. I am a recent graduate of the University of Alabama (I know... I love the Bulldogs too)  where I studied exercise and sports science with concentrations in fitness, nutrition, and coaching. While at UA, I spent 3 years assisting with the strength and conditioning programs of various sports. Most recently I worked with the dance and gymnastics teams. I also earned my certification as a strength and conditioning specialist through the NSCA.

My love for exercise started at a young age. I was a competitive gymnast for 7 years and then ran track for 3 years in high school doing the triple jump, long jump, and hurdling.  While in high school I began working a few hours a week at a gym where I taught a workout class to middle school girls as well as teaching gymnastics at the gym where I competed.  In college, I found that I missed being an athlete but I started to truly realize my passion for fitness and coaching. I knew that I wanted to pursue those areas as a full-time career, and the Lord has opened doors for me to make that a reality by working as a Personal Trainer at TransFit as well as a gymnastics coach.

I know that exercise has made such a difference in my life, not only physically but in all areas and I hope to help bring that to anyone that I get to serve in personal training.  2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, "For God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." That truth near to my heart and I hope to share my love of whole body health with you!  I will be in the studio teaching TransFormer and small group sessions and will be taking clients 1-1 or semi-private for specific goal achievement.

I would love to help any young gymnasts, dancers, cheerleaders or female athletes of any kind get stronger for their specific sport. I have experience as a gymnast and a track athlete and have worked with athletes of various sports up to the college level. Whether high school, middle school or younger we can work to increase your sports performance or overall fitness through strength training and cardiovascular endurance training in a fun and safe way. Additionally, I would love to work with any college students to help you meet your fitness goals!

I am so excited to be in Athens and look forward to being a part of the TransFit community.”

🎉 Happy 3rd Birthday TransFit!

Sweet friends,

We are so excited to see you this week because we are celebrating TransFit’s 3rd Birthday! Can you believe it’s been 3 years since we moved into the TransFit Studio in 5 Points? TransFit (Transformational Fitness) began in Caroline’s basement gym in East Athens when she was called to encourage women and become a personal trainer. She created this truly unique business by helping women view exercise as a form of worship! Today, TransFit is a full service personal training studio  designed to help women live their BEST lives by becoming transformed in every area of life- body, mind and spirit. That is where our foundational verse and mantra comes from: "Do not conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" Romans 12:2

Today, we celebrate every client and friend who has been a part of TransFit because we are stronger together! Together we are all transforming the community. We have loved partnering with Hope 139, Action Ministries, Downtown Academy, and now ESP to actually “live” transformed: using our bodies to love and serve this community!

We have transformed lives so much over the past 3 years in this space and could not have done it without all of your sweat, smiles, and prayers. We are SO grateful for you! You have filled the studio with encouragement and positivity as you have accomplished your goals and inspired one another to live transformed.

We can celebrate every day because we are so blessed to be surrounded by such amazing women and an awesome community!

IMG_1003-1_600x.jpg

A word from our Director of Spiritual Outreach, Pam Adams:

“Friends, we are so excited about starting our Bible Study Esther: The Courage To Commit. My prayer is we will be encouraged and strengthened in our faith as we learn, trust, and apply the truths of God from this dramatic historical narrative.

In The Book of Esther, all the covenant promises to Abraham and David looked to be in jeopardy, but as we will see God is in control of every person and event and His promises will stand. He is the architect ordering our lives. Romans 8:28 says “we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” This is a reassuring promise for us when we are fearful, distressed, anxious, doubtful and find ourselves questioning life.”

Untitled_design_1_600x.jpg

“A few chapters later, Paul tells us in Romans 15:4 that “whatever was written in earlier times (meaning the Old Testament) was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” The Book of Esther instructs us to press on and be encouraged by the truths and promises of God’s Word, and in particular the truths that He is committed to us, His people, and is in every detail of our lives.

We’d love to have you join us in this Bible Study. Sign up on our app or email Pam@transfitathens.com. All women of the community are welcome!”

Love and Blessings,

Pam

First Place Winner - Paige Colquitt

“I love competition… not so much competing against others, but competing against myself. I love trying to beat my own score or trying to do better with my goals from one week to the next. So when Caroline mentioned the Holiday Extravaganza, I was all in! I knew losing some pounds would be great, but I was actually more concerned with just feeling better. Some days I ate pretty well, but on the days I didn’t, I felt downright yucky. I felt bloated, was experiencing some digestive issues, and felt some joint pain. I knew certain foods I was putting in my body were causing this. Cleaning up my act with food choices became my priority during the holidays. I knew if I could improve my nutrition during the hardest eating time of the year, I could set myself up for success when 2019 rolled around.

My name is Paige Colquitt and I’m a retired kindergarten teacher. I love to read, hike, bike, paddle board, garden, volunteer, and I especially love to cook. With the cooking, I’ve tended in the past to focus on creating lots of ‘southern dishes,’ because those are the recipes I grew up eating. I knew I needed to change that. Since coming to TransFit over a year and a half ago, I do feel as if I have gotten better with creating and eating healthier meals and snacks. Being consistent, however, has been an obstacle. I would eat salads during the week, but I would scarf down pizza or fried pork chops on the weekend. Or I would do great with my water intake for four days straight, then hardly pick up the water bottle the next four days. It’s like I had all the pieces of the puzzle (knowing what I needed to do) but the pieces weren’t fitting together to complete the entire puzzle.

This past fall during our Bible Study, Pam Adams recommended a book to me entitled Made to Crave by Lysa TerKeurst. The premise of the book is to crave God, not food, and therefore, allow God to have control over this area of your life. After reading the book (I highly recommend it!), I realized that is what I needed to do because it certainly wasn’t working with me being in charge. Reading this book has changed my perspective on food. Now before I eat something, I ask, “God, is this something you want me to put in my mouth?” I’m not perfect by any means, but putting God above food has been a huge paradigm shift for me.”

IMG_7307_600x.jpg

“Caroline mentions a word often that I’ve actually adopted as my word for 2019 … INTENTIONALITY. I’ve intentionally started looking on Pinterest for clean-eating recipes. I’ve intentionally planned my meals ahead for the week by writing them down, making sure my fridge is stocked with the ingredients, and making it a point to stick to my meal plans each day, unless some emergency of some sort comes up. My breakfasts have consisted of smoothies (cinnamon almond is my favorite), Greek yogurt with berries and walnuts, and egg muffins. Salads with lots of fresh veggies and a protein are a must now for lunch. And dinner is usually a slice of lean meat with lots of vegetables (broccoli and brussels sprouts are my favorites). I’ve loved trying out new recipes on Pinterest like Italian Beef Soup or One Pan Turkey Meatballs with veggies. Sweet potatoes have become one of my favorites now … for breakfast, in my salad, or as a snack! I’ve limited my simple carbs to just fruits and even introduced ghee and almond butter into my diet. Saying goodbye to peanut butter has been hard! I intentionally make it a point to carry my water bottle with me everywhere now, getting in at least 80 ounces of water each day. My body feels so much better now, and I’m sleeping more soundly too!

My husband and I visited New Orleans during the holidays so I knew that would be the true test of my eating. You can’t think of New Orleans without thinking of all that good food! I just gave it to God and took it one day at a time. I brought my own snacks (Lara Bars and almonds) and enjoyed the food, just making sure I ate small portions. I think all the walking in the city helped too! Again, just trying to be intentional with my choices helped a lot.

Something else that was very beneficial was the weight check-in with Caroline each Monday morning after class. She was (and is) such a great encourager whether I met my goal each week or not. She continued to remind me that it’s not just about the weight, it’s about seeing myself the way God sees me. She also reminded me that transformation is a process that occurs over time. That has stuck with me a lot because it is so true. It does not happen overnight.

I love the Transformer classes! I’m an early bird so I normally attend the 5:30 a.m. class. It gets my day off to a fantastic start. On the other days, I get in my cardio swimming laps at Ramsey. Swimming is such a wonderful all-over workout! Caroline’s exercises in the back of her Bible Study book are awesome too. Those came in handy when I was in New Orleans.

It has not been a perfect last couple of weeks but I have tried to put more consistency and intentionality in what I do when it comes to food. Allowing God to be in the driver’s seat has been a game changer as well. I look forward to continuing this journey of good health, exercise, and nutrition! And I’m so thankful for TransFit and the change it has instilled in my life!” -Paige

WOW, Paige! We are so inspired by your journey! Living transformed is an ongoing process and Paige shows us exactly how capable we all are of meeting our goals this year one day at a time!

Another Winner - Krista McLean

“The Holiday Extravaganza came at just the right time! I felt yucky and my clothes were just not fitting the way they should anymore! So, I decided to enter the challenge and really go for it! First step was to cut out the Dr. Pepper! Once I did that the rest of the sugar was easy to avoid.  I cut out almost all sugar, pasta, bread (except for the occasional splurge) and began training for a half marathon. All of that, especially the changes in my diet are what worked for me!  I feel so much better and my pants fit again!” -Krista

Tips to Make The Second Half of 2018 Your Best!

Clean slate, yes, it's Sunday! Let today be a fresh start for YOU! You can make the 2nd half of 2018 your best! Today, shift your thoughts... focus on being thankful for the body that you have and set a new goal (or two) to ensure you are treating your body with care and respect! Write this goal down, put the goal as a reminder in your phone, and tell a friend- that is how you make your goals become reality!

One new goal could be to increase the amount of high-quality protein that you include in your daily nutrition plan!  Protein is an essential food for repairing muscle tissue,  building and toning muscles, and for keeping you feeling full for longer. High protein snacks should be consumed after 30-45 minutes after workouts for maximum muscle building and repair benefits and should be consumed as a snacks during the day to fight cravings and help manage weight.

Here are some of our Dietitian, Kaeti Shurling's,  favorites:

  • 1 hard-boiled egg- 8g

  • 1/2 cup chickpeas- 18g

  • 1/2 cup cashews- 16g

  • 3 oz of tuna- 25g

Try out these great high protein snacks and start your healthy lifestyle with a delicious, higher protein nutrition plan!

Here is a high protein healthy popsicle to try this week!

Screen Shot 2017-07-17 at 11.16.03 AM.png

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup – strawberries

  • 1 1/4 cup – coconut water

  • 1 teaspoon – honey

  • 4 teaspoon – chia seeds

  • 1 1/2 cup pieces – mango

Directions:
Puree strawberries (fresh or frozen) with half of the coconut water in a blender or food processor. Taste the mixture and blend in honey to desired sweetness, if needed. Stir in 2 teaspoons of chia seeds. Set aside. Puree mango (fresh or frozen) with the other half of the coconut water in a blender or food processor. Taste the mixture and blend in honey to desired sweetness, if needed. Stir in the remaining 2 teaspoons of chia seeds. Alternately pour each fruit mixture (for a marbled look) into popsicle molds and freeze until set. Makes 10 (3 ounces) popsicles. If you have an Ice Pop Maker let it freeze for 45 minutes and then add wooden sticks so they stay in place better and the lid will come off easier.

Additionally, here is one of our favorite workouts you can try today! Add this workout to your week and then enjoy a high protein popsicle after! Let's do it, ladies!

Come out of your comfort zone and try something NEW! The Athens Half Marathon and 5k is the October 20th/21st weekend and now is the time to start training to walk, run, or jog this amazing event!  We have a FREE training plan below!

cassiewrightphoto00056.jpg

Lisa’s Top 10 Reason’s to RUN!

Hebrews 12:1-2

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfecter of faith.”

10. To achieve goals!

There is a variety of goals to be set for a run; finishing a workout, going farther, going faster, and more. As an added bonus, setting and achieving goals boost your confidence and self-esteem!

9. To tone legs and butt!

Not only is running an awesome heart-pumping workout, it also serves as strength training for your legs and booty! When running your lower body carries your entire body weight and with each run, your bones and muscles get stronger.

8. You can do it anywhere.

At the park, in the city, in the neighborhood, or on the beach you can run. If the weather doesn’t allow, hit the treadmill.

7. Running burns serious calories.

Typically running can burn an estimate of 100 calories per 10 minutes depending on pace. Jogging/Running helps us keep a healthy body weight. After a run be ready to fuel your body with healthy food choices.

6. Running gets you outdoors to enjoy God’s beautiful creation.

God has given us such an incredible world to enjoy. Even if you're not going to stop and smell the flowers during your cardio workout, you can look around and smile and thank God for His awesome work.

5. Running reduces stress!

Not that any of us have stress in our lives, but just in case please note Minutes into your run your brain begins to release hormones that naturally improve your mood, making you calmer and more relaxed... YES, PLEASE.

unnamed-1 copy 5.jpg

4. Running can be family time.

Your run can include the kids biking beside you or a chat with your husband about weekend plans. A run can look like a fun game of chase with the entire family. When its race time the family can be there cheering you on or running beside you.

3. Running is SOCIAL!

It is amazing how much better you feel after a run with your friends. It’s a time to encourage each other, sometimes vent, and then encourage again. It’s a recipe swap and family activity planning. It’s also a chance to get to know someone new and make friendships that will always share a special bond.

2. Running can be Quiet time.

I know I just raved about running being fun with family and friends, but sometimes it also a time to be alone. A time to clear your mind, to be quiet, to think, to daydream, to pray, to listen.

AND MY NUMBER 1 REASON TO RUN...

1. WORSHIP!

God has given us such amazing gifts; our bodies, our friends, our health, our minds, our world, our community, and our families. These are just a few of the things we are reminded of and can praise Him for on a run or walk!

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous”

Psalm 139:13-14

Jumping for JOY- June Client Spotlight & Challenge Winner!

Sweet friend!

The month of June we have encouraged you to light a fire within! We want to help you ignite the flame of passion for whole body health and wellness! Last week we challenged each of you to try the 5 Day Food Journal Challenge. We had so many amazing clients commit to 5-days of food journaling. Thank YOU for pushing yourself and committing to living transformed! If you didn't get to try the challenge last week, don't worry- it's never too late to start! Try it again this week!

One of our clients, Joy Cooper took on this challenge and saw such transformation, as a result! Joy is an amazing mother and such a dedicated hard worker! You will see Joy and her beautiful daughter Hannah sweating together in the studio! They both always give 110% effort in and out of TransFit! Joy is dedicated to living transformed and has learned about the importance of accountability and dedication, even when it might be challenging! Joy has been food journaling and committed to our 5-day challenge! We are proud to announce her as our JUNE Client Spotlight and the Food Journal Challenge Winner! We are excited for you to read her journey and for you to see progress and total body, mind, and spirit transformation she is making one day at a time!

IMG_1115.jpeg

My name is Joy Cooper, I am a single mom to 3 AMAZING kids. We have been homeschooling for 9 years. I am a tutor with Classical Conversations, a VIPKID English teacher to children in China and a small group leader at Athens Church for a 9th-grade girls group.

I have been attending the TransFit luncheons, classes, and Bible study for the past few years but never very consistently. I wanted to be more consistent but I just couldn’t make it happen. I had even tried the “My Fitness Pal” app before but just could not commit to figuring out the daily meals and snacks.

A few weeks ago when Caroline mentioned that they were going to have a “My Fitness Pal” app challenge, it happened to coincide with my desire for change and accountability! So… I decided that I should try to figure out the app to track our food and water intake.  My daughter, Hannah, has been using the app for a year! She helped us figure out the app and plan out our meals for the first few days. I will say that once you figure out the first few days it does seem to get easier.  Hannah knew that I liked little treats at the end of my day so she had me add my “treats” in first so that I had enough at the end of the day for a treat. (piece of dark chocolate or a serving of Halo ice cream) When I first started using the App, I was AMAZED at how many things that I would just pick up and eat throughout the day. The App is a great accountability partner!

unnamed-1.jpg

I now have set a goal to go to 3 TransFit classes a week. I plan ahead and make my schedule fit around the classes. I love the encouraging atmosphere and people at TransFit. At the end of every session when we are stretching and relaxing with music that encourages our hearts and God’s Word proclaimed over our lives, I am refreshed and ready for what God has planned for the day.  One of my favorite verses is from Psalms 34:5 “Those who look to HIM are RADIANT; their faces are never covered with shame.” Every time I leave TransFit I am reminded to “look to Him”.  God is the one that inspires me and encourages me but he uses the sweet ladies of TransFit to remind me of just how good He is and how much He loves me! I LOVE worshiping my Heavenly Father with these ladies each week in the TransFit Studio.

Here are a few of Joy's favorite things:

unnamed-2.jpg

My favorite foods right now are the Halo “Candy Bar” ice cream, Oatmega bar “chocolate coconut”, Hint “mango grapefruit” water and Trader Joe’s “Cowboy Quinoa veggie burger. I have been making a salad with the veggie burger, romaine lettuce, grape tomatoes, mini cucumber, 1/2 cup of fresh salsa from Sam’s and a Tsp of sour cream.

unnamed.jpg

Joy, we are SO proud of YOU! Keep taking it one day at a time, planning ahead, staying accountable and keep motivated to reach your goals!

How to Live Transformed on Vacation! 5 Tips You Can Take ANYWHERE!

CWP_9180-2.jpg

Friends, it’s sweet summertime! The kids are out of school and that much-anticipated summer vacation has finally arrived! Each of you has worked so hard in the studio toward your summer fitness goals. Thank you for giving your best!

Just because you’re traveling and away from your normal daily routine, doesn’t mean you must compromise good nutrition and exercise! You’ve put in too many hours of strength training and cardio sessions to throw it all away! Right?!

You want to feel your best before, during and after your vacation! We want to help you enjoy your vacation and come home feeling relaxed and refreshed — instead of feeling guilty or like you’ve blown your transformation goals!

CWP_8871.jpg

Just like with everyday life, preparation is key! Planning ahead can help you avoid any slip-ups with your goals and your whole body transformation! So let us help you with 5 simple strategies for Living Transformed when you’re on vacation!

1. Pack smart!

First things first, grab your workout gear! Throw your tennis shoes and exercise clothes into your suitcase. Take your tennis racket if courts will be available. Bring a resistance band or an ankle band!

Pack your favorite healthy snacks. Lots of fruit, nuts and protein bars. Apples and oranges are easy to throw into your carry-on luggage or purse. Pick up a box of the 100-calorie packs of raw nuts. On-the-go packs of roasted edamame can also be found at your local grocery store. And protein bars are an easy snack to pack — just remember to check the nutrition labels and pick bars with 5 grams or less of sugar!

travel snacks copy.PNG

Also, consider packing a shaker bottle and a few servings of protein powder. You can portion out individual servings in snack-sized Ziplock bags. Or Blender Bottle has a shaker bottle that comes with separate containers for storing protein powder.

2. Research ahead of time!

Get online and see what’s close to your hotel or condo. Is there a grocery store nearby? What healthy, local restaurants are close? There are app delivery services that will deliver groceries to your condo where-ever you are!

Also, if you’re staying in a hotel, find out if there’s a kitchenette or mini-fridge available in your room.  Ask for a mini fridge! Does the facility have a fitness center available?

3. Hydrate!

So many of us neglect to hydrate our bodies while traveling even though dehydration is very common during trips. Pack extra water bottles (in a cooler if there’s space) or take your favorite water bottle to refill along the way. Drink water as soon as you get up in the morning, and when you sit down at each meal, drink a large glass of water first! You can still get in your 80oz daily on vacation!

4. Make smart choices when dining out!

Most importantly, choose restaurants that offer healthy options that support your lifestyle! So many restaurants post their menus online now so you can look it up before you dine. Then you’re prepared to order when you arrive and aren’t tempted with less healthy options. You can also check the entree on MY FITNESS PAL! The food journaling app!

Don’t be afraid to ask for a healthier option or to customize your meal. Most restaurants are used to this now and don’t mind accommodating your needs!

Choose seafood, chicken or another lean meat option and order them steamed, broiled, grilled or roasted. If fried is your only option on the menu, remember don’t be afraid to ask for another option!

Order your potato baked, boiled or roasted instead of fried! And ask to leave off the butter and sour cream! Consider ordering a sweet potato instead of white potato!

To avoid over-eating, eat small meals throughout the day so you’re not starving at dinner. Take your time eating your meal, enjoy every bite as well as your company at the table!

Of course, it’s vacation, so relax and enjoy a cocktail! Just don’t overdo it! And make sure that you’ve hydrated throughout the day.

5. Sweat!

You know the feeling you have after you’ve worked out, so why sacrifice a good sweat session when you’re on the road? That’s why you packed your workout gear — so use it!

Lace up your tennis shoes and hit the pavement (or sand!) This is a great way to explore the city you’re in, too. And since you researched ahead of time, you already know the parks or running trails nearby! We promise that you will not regret a workout! Don't forget about our FREE workouts and workout videos on our website and YOUTUBE channel

If you want a good strength workout during your trip, here are a couple options you can do anywhere without any weights:

Today, we wanted to share one of our favorite summer TACO TUESDAY recipes! You will love it and so will your kids! Some kiddos aren't big fish eaters, but my kids LOVED these tacos! They have a perfect texture, and flavor! Enjoy!

Blackened Salmon Tacos

Total time: 20 minutes, Serves 8 Tacos

Ingredients

For the blackened salmon:

  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 (6 oz.) pieces salmon
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the tacos:

  • 8 corn or flour tortillas or Bibb Lettuce for wraps
  • 2 cups green lettuce, chopped fine
  • 1 can organic black beans (rinsed)
  • 2 cups of cauliflower rice or white rice for kids
  • 1 cup diced tomato
  • 1/4 cup diced red onion (optional)
  • 2 tablespoon minced cilantro
  • ¼ cup greek yogurt as a sub for sour cream
  • 1 lime, cut into small wedges
  • 1 avocado

Instructions

To make salmon: In a small bowl combine the spices. Put the mixture on a plate and coat the portions of salmon. Heat a large heavy-bottomed pan or cast iron skillet over medium heat, and add the oil. Add the salmon flesh side down. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side or until skin is crispy. Once the salmon has slightly cooled, peel the skin away with a fork and cut salmon into large chunks.  You can also broil the salmon on 500 for 8-11 minutes on foil.

Fill each tortilla or lettuce wrap with lettuce, tomato, onion, black beans, rice of choice, and about ½ of each salmon fillet, a sprinkle of cilantro, a drizzle of fresh lime and a drizzle of Greek yogurt or salsa.

After a wonderful Celebrate Women's Week, we want to celebrate our May Client Spotlight, Patti McWhorter!

Patti's Transformation Story:

I had a long and fulfilling career as a middle and high school language arts teacher, adjunct professor at UGA and Piedmont College, and language arts consultant at Northeast Georgia RESA. When I finally retired from teaching and education, however, I realized that I had no excuse not to implement an appropriate exercise program. Work provided my biggest excuse for not consistently exercising, other than walking. I desperately wanted to be stronger and more flexible – weight loss would hopefully follow.

After several friends mentioned Transfit, I called and made an appointment with Katie Woodall, who introduced me to the total program. I shared with Katie that I knew if I focused on losing weight and not on fitness, I would be frustrated and less likely to reach any goals I might set. So, I decided that the small group setting for personal training would be the best place to start.

For over a year, I have tried to consistently attend Transfit sessions when I am in town – as many as four each week. I added the yoga sessions when those were offered, and I have recently started the HIIT sessions to focus on cardio fitness as well. I love the atmosphere that encourages each woman to do her best and not compare herself to others. Maybe it is my age, but I think that this is the most valuable lesson we can learn – this is not something I thought in my thirties or forties – I was constantly comparing myself to others and inevitably coming up “lesser than” every time.

When I attended Caroline’s Bible study, I experienced a major change in my thinking about food and fitness. I had never really connected honoring God to eating right and taking care of my health, and the acceptance of this connection has deepened my commitment to living healthier and remaining active as I age.

My initial goals of strength and flexibility remain my primary focus, along with eating well and drinking water. I do focus on eating less – portion control is important – but I generally allow myself to eat a small amount of something special when the opportunity presents itself.

Finally, my greatest challenge is taking the time to focus on exercise when I am not in town for sessions, so I tend to rely on walking. Caroline’s videos and routines are wonderful, but I still have to stop what I’m focused on and do them!

I continue to be a work in progress, as we all are, but I trust that the influence of Transfit will keep me headed in the right direction. I have a wonderful family – a husband, three married children, and three grandchildren, and I want to be healthy enough to enjoy time with all of them.

Patti, we are so proud of you! We hope and pray that each of you feel encouraged and inspired by Patti's story! What an example for us all.

Let's finish this week strong! Focus on getting at least 80 oz of water and add some stretching time to your day! Make the most of each day. We believe in YOU!

If you have any questions, please email us at transfitathens@gmail.com.

Mother and Daughters Client Spotlight You Are Going to LOVE!

Sweet friends,

Thank you for challenging yourself to run the race with perseverance this week! Wow, we had an amazing week in the studio!  Today, we have the honor and joy of highlighting three of our amazing clients! These three are special, as they are a mother and twin daughters client spotlight! Elizabeth, Cynthia, and Cindy are our April client spotlights, each with their own personal transformation story!

These TransFit ladies will inspire you to keep giving your best one hour, one day at a time to live transformed

Cindy Lester's transformation story:

I’ve always been an outdoors “Tomboy” growing up climbing trees, riding bikes, playing baseball and football as a kid…. And I have played Tennis and golf most of my life.  About eight years ago, at 60 years old, playing golf at the Country Club, I was “just slightly” in the woods on one of my drives and slipped on a tree root, breaking my fibula. After that, I started therapy and a workout routine that continues today. I started then and have continued cardio workout at the club for an hour a day, 3 times a week. I generally try to do TransFit two days a week, tennis one or two days a week and golf when it’s pretty (fair weather golfer). I love tennis and we’re on a 4.0, 65 and over tennis team that will go to state in October – just because we have no local competition.  Our tennis team did go all the way to Nationals back in 2009 in Palm Springs, California and came in second place Nationally…. Thanks to everyone else on the team! I have really enjoyed the weight exercises and just feeling more fit after starting TransFit classes… I continue to work professionally at Synovus Trust Company, managing the local Athens division and really enjoy meeting and getting to know new clients and people through my work. And finally, I’m ABSOLUTELY most proud of my girls, their families, and their personal accomplishments.

Elizabeth Johnson's transformation story:

Although I have been active in sports all my life, medical school and residency seemed to take my time and slow my focus on exercising. My husband and I moved back to Athens after finishing my residency in Internal Medicine, and I had just given birth to our son, Cole.  Again, it seemed being a new mom and working to build a practice put a daily exercise routine on the back burner.  Finally, Cynthia, my twin sister, moved back to Athens as well.  We have always encouraged and challenged each other. About 6 years ago, we started doing home programs together at lunch at my sister’s house. We kept each other accountable and would text daily about which workout we were going to do when finished seeing patients for the morning.  It got me back exercising 5 days a week and I had so much energy. Even on weekends, Cynthia and I would encourage each other to make up a day if we had missed during the week.

In June of 2017, Cynthia had given my mom and I a gift card to TransFit for Christmas, and I finally used it one Saturday morning. Cynthia had already been going so she could show me the ropes.  I got in several Saturday morning classes and loved it, but it was only 1 day a week and I would exercise on my own during the weekday.  I kept telling myself I could never make 5:30 am work. Even Caroline gently suggested I try a 5:30 am class.  Cynthia again had recently tried the 5:30 am class, and I knew if she could make it work with getting the kids to school then I could too. I remember not sleeping at all that first October night I knew I was going at 5:30 am because I was so nervous about making it home, getting dressed myself, and getting the kids up and ready. However, since October I have been going to TransFit most Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings and I love it. It starts my day off right and keeps me more motivated during the day!

Exercise isn’t everything though, it's a piece to transformation. Having my son in travel baseball and daughter in gymnastics makes for eating out a lot during the weekend. This can blow an entire week of hard work. I try, although definitely not always, to make good choices.  I am better some weeks than others. I have started packing a healthy snack bag thanks to Katie Woodall’s great suggestions recently. I love the Oatmega bars, Chomps beef sticks, and Organic fit bars. Plus, my children now will go to the snack bag first instead of asking for money at the concession stands, so they are getting less junk. I have a small refrigerator in my office that I can keep Greek yogurt and cut veggies to snack on at work. I have started getting weekly meals from Perfect Portions with Kaeti Shurling during the week to help keep me accountable with weeknight sporting events. My current goal is the late night snacks or meals. Many weekend nights, we are driving home from a tournament at 10 pm and my son needs something to eat after his game. At that hour, fast food is about the only thing open. I’m tired and this is when I make my worse food decisions. If home, I probably would be asleep.  So, my goal going into more Spring and Summer sports is to make better food decisions.

Cynthia Shepherd's transformation story:

I grew up in Watkinsville. My mother, Cindy Lester, and twin sister, Elizabeth Johnson are also clients at Transfit. I grew up in a very active family. Elizabeth and I started playing tennis at age 5. We were very competitive and played tournaments growing up. We eventually played in high school at OCHS at  No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. We also played basketball and volleyball. Learning to study and do homework with a busy after school sports schedule was something that definitely prepared me to for the years ahead in medical school, residency and fellowship. As a family growing up, my parents also instilled the importance of being active together as a family. Despite both parents working full-time jobs, they supported us at every event, home and away. We enjoyed playing golf, water skiing and going for long walks in Madison with my grandmother.

My husband and I moved back to Watkinsville, our hometown, in July 2011. At that point, we had a 3-year-old daughter and a 9-month-old son. I was not back to my pre-baby weight and this affected my mood and outlook about myself. I started doing home workouts and ultimately encouraged my sister to be my accountability partner. We would work out at lunch together 4-5 days a week. Still, I was not happy with my weight and knew that my diet was not where it should be. I signed up for Caroline’s Nutritional program in the Summer/Spring of 2013 and loved the weekly meal plans and grocery lists. Her meals are healthy for the whole family and easy to cook. While exercising consistently 5 days a week and following my daily meal plan, I was able to get to my goal weight.

unnamed-3.jpg

I started working out with Transfit approximately 2 years ago and love the Transformer workouts. I initially started going 1-2 days per week and worked out at home the remaining days. Now I have found the 5:30 AM class fits great with my schedule and helps me start my day more alert and on a positive note. I usually work out 3 days a week at Transfit and 2-3 days a week at my home gym. I love HITT training, running and interval training. My husband has done a number of Ironmans and ½ Ironmans, so he encouraged me to do the Tri-to-Beat Cancer’s Duathlon a few years ago.  I find working out with others is very motivational and love the positive inspiration and encouraging smiles from all the Transfit trainers.  I have definitely gained muscle and strength. It’s also pretty awesome to work out with my 67 y/o mother at Transfit on some afternoons. My children know that if I don’t get to exercise, I am grumpy. They see that exercise is an important part of my life and have learned more about making healthy choices.

As an oncologist, I stress to my patients that exercise and eating a heart-healthy diet with plenty of lean protein and veggies is the best way to fight and prevent cancer. Exercise also relieves stress and anxiety and can also help prevent other diseases such as Alzheimer’s dementia (particularly interval training), cardiac disease and osteoporosis.

In regards to meal planning, I have found that using Kaeti Sterling’s Perfect Portions has been a wonderful time savior for my family and a nutritional way to feed my family quickly when I get home late from work.  My family’s favorite recipes include turkey meatballs and turkey burgers.
